Equaino edges narrow Abernant Stakes verdict

By James Burn 3:01PM 15 APR 2010 Report: Newmarket, Thursday
Connaught Access Flooring Abernant Stakes (Listed) 6f, 3y0+

THE Barry Hills-trained Equiano got back to winning ways by edging out Mullionmileanhour in the Listed Abernant Stakes at Newmarket on Thursday.

Returning as the 11-4 favourite, Equiano had not won since landing the Group 1 King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot two years ago, but showed his liking for this contest by finishing second to Tax Free last year.

As he did 12 months ago, Equiano bounced out of the stalls, taking the eight-runner field along at a decent rate.

He was tracked by the Queen's Golden Stream, while Mullionmileanhour, sent off at 5-1, raced further back.

Despite cutting down Equiano's advantage, Mullionmileanhour could not get in front, losing out by a short head in the photo finish.

The 7-2 chance Doncaster Rover finished two legnths back in third.
