Carter cleared to ride again despite BHA ban

Gary Carter, the jockey who was warned off for five years by the BHA, begins his riding comeback in France on Wednesday despite still being disqualified because he is on the forfeit list over an outstanding debt.

Carter, whose sentence for passing on privileged information to a gambler about horses he was about to ride expired in October, has secured a licence from the racing authorities in Spain, where he lives, but will return at Deauville where he has two mounts for trainer Jennifer Bidgood.

With the BHA unlikely to grant a licence to the 45-year-old in Britain, Carter obtained a new licence in Spain but it was done without a check being made in Britain where the jockey owes £2,068.51 in unpaid fines.

BHA spokesman Paul Struthers said: “On the basis that Spain didn’t approach us for clearance we will be informing the Spanish authorities that he is on the forfeit list and therefore is effectively disqualified and ask them to reciprocate.

“It will be up to them whether or not they do. If he is to clear the outstanding amount then he will cease to be on the forfeit list.”

The jockey, who lives on the Costa del Sol, is booked to ride Lisselan Laughter and Life To Golf for English-born Bidgood, a former employee of Clive Brittain, who trains a string near Deauville after a previous stint in Spain.

Carter said on Tuesday: “Jennifer and I go back some years and it was her idea that I should try to restart my career. I will be helping her at the stable but am still based with my family near Mijas in Spain. These will be my first rides since finishing my five-year ban and the Spanish authorities granted me a licence a month ago.

“I have commitments in Spain where they have racing on Sundays but I shall be coming up to Deauville quite frequently and will probably go and ride at Cagnes-sur-Mer when the Flat season starts in January. I’m glad to be back and rode several times in France earlier in my career.”

In her first season in France, Bidgood has trained 25 winners and collected over €385,000 in prize-money.

She is on holiday in Sri Lanka from where she said on Tuesday: “Gary has come over to help us at the stable where he will ride out and also be on board some of our runners.”
